Goals
After reading this article, you should understand the basics of how to manage time, how time management affects work output and why time management is crucial in order to achieve more.
Moreover, I share tips that have worked for me and I encourage you trying to manage time through these ideas.
How to manage time
When it comes to time management, there are some great tips and ideas you can use to enhance time management.
1. Know how much time you have for tasks
First of all, it is crucial to recognize how much time you have for tasks.
As you know how much time you have or need to have, it is much more natural to plan your tasks in a way you’re able to complete them in less time.
It’s easier to manage time throughout the day when you know how much time you have for doing your things.
2. Plan your tasks
Planning tasks beforehand is like preparing for a presentation. You clearly know how and when to start, and how much effort you need to put in each task.
Planning your tasks means:
- You know when to start it
- You know how long it takes
- You know how to start doing tasks
- You pay attention to possible distractors
Furthermore, setting a plan on how to complete your tasks is an excellent basis of time management.
3. Get rid of irrelevant tasks and actions
If you want to manage time properly and get things done, it’s important to drop unimportant tasks.
They will waste time and won’t take you anywhere. Moreover, getting used to them kills your productivity.
Get rid of:
- Scrolling phone all the time
- Watching Netflix for hours
- doing pointless things which hurt your time management
Ask yourself, “is this task taking me anywhere or is it enhancing my ability to manage time”? If the answer is no – stop it immediately.
Why would you spend time on tasks that are totally pointless? Getting rid of them will make you efficient with your time.
4. Use every moment of time wisely
The better you use your time the better your time management is going to be.
Know that every minute you waste on something pointless, decreases your ability to work on needed tasks and harms time management.
Therefore, using every minute of your time wisely and in a planned way is such a crucial way to keep your time management on point.
If you want to stay productive and manage time properly, do the “must do tasks” before spending your time on something not so relevant.
5. Eat the frog
What I mean by this, is to start always with the biggest or hardest task. It is good way to start completing your work and manage time.
In addition, you will have enough time and great productivity to complete it. As you finish it, it is natural to complete more and manage your time in a way you planned.
Never skip the hardest task. Moreover, it’s easy to postpone it to the next day and the very following day.
When you gently start with the hardest or biggest task, you are going to have accomplished feeling even if other tasks didn’t get done.
6. Know how much time each task takes
This tip is more “advanced”. Generally, it would be fantastic if we knew how long it takes to complete each task.
However, this ability requires some experience in order to know how much each task takes time.
Basically, if you are able to improve in this aspect, you can take time management to another level and stay much more efficient with your time.
In my opinion, this trick is super beneficial and I would suggest to work on it because it’s definitely going to pay off long-term.
7. Avoid multitasking
Multitasking is dangerous when it comes to being efficient with time or productive in general. It kills the ability to manage your time properly.
The reason why it’s so dangerous is that you feel very productive and you’re “getting” a lot done at the same time.
However, it disturbs your focus constantly and your work output is suffering because of that.
Multitasking is always one of the biggest reasons we don’t complete things we want on time. When we multitask, we sort of lie to ourselves that we are getting things done and stay on track.
Stop multitasking, because it drastically harms time management.
Managing time VS not managing time
Time management
- Understands the value of time
- Focuses on one task at a time
- Starts with the biggest/hardest one
- Completes daily to-do list
- Uses time wisely
No time management
- Hard to be efficient with time
- Attempts to multitask
- Doesn't complete daily tasks
- Wastes time for pointless things
